Weds 28/02/2018 Training Cancelled

Due to the weather conditions, tonight’s training session on the astro is cancelled.  Please pass on the message to anyone that doesn’t check the website or Facebook, and take care out there!

Training will resume as usual next week (7th March) – depending on snow!

Run for Mandy

In January this year, we sadly lost a dear friend and founding member of Newent Runners, Mandy Whittington, after a short illness.  Mandy was very generous with her time and dedicated many hours to our club and local parkrun, so we would like to use this opportunity to fund-raise for a cause that she supported.

Our team of runners includes:

Andrew Callard, Yvonne Featherstone, Ruth Hayden-Cox, Clive Jones, Jonathan Miles and Emily Trenwith tackling the marathon (first one for the three ladies!)

Chris Barber, Liza Barber, Katie Cook, Dermot Kelly, Helen Kelly, Lynn Latham, and Maggie Pettit all running the 10k event.

We all have mental health – just like your physical health, you probably only notice it if something is not right.  Every year, one in four of us will experience a mental health problem, and Mind believe no-one should have to face that alone. They will listen, give you support and advice, and fight your corner.

Please donate whatever you can to this very worthwhile cause, it will be greatly appreciated.

Members’ Social Event: Golf Sunday 6th August

We are running a golf event at 1pm on Sunday 6th August – address TBC.

Car sharing from Newent is encouraged, you can find each other in the Official Members’ Group on Facebook.

Cost is £20 per person to include coffee on arrival, 18 holes of golf, and ham, egg and chips afterwards.   (Please let Kerry Cawkwell know any dietary requirements.)  If you have your own clubs please feel free to take them, if not they will lend you some for free. However you must let us know in advance if you need some.

£10 deposit is required to secure your place and the balance is to be paid on the day.  Deposits and dietary/club requirements to be given to Liza Barber, Chris Barber (who will be your contact on the day), Lynn Latham or Kerry Cawkwell.

Because of the number of people interested in this we are keeping it as a members only activity, but please do not fret, we have lots of exciting things planned that partners and kids can attend. Watch this space!!

Chris has kindly written a suggested framework for the session, please click here to open or download for details.

Please send us your pictures of the day afterwards – you can upload them in the Facebook group or send them to Emily Trenwith.

July Sunday Social Runs

July is a good month to get some miles in for longer races in the autumn, so we are going to base our Sunday road runs at Costa for July.  We will aim for 8 am starts to get the miles in, but also loop back to collect others that will do at least 30 minutes less (there is the option to do/miss out more distance at the end of the run as well) and pick up shift 2 that start later at 8.30 am.

  • 9th July – 8 am starters 100 minutes, 8.30am crew 70min
  • 16th July – 120 minutes, 8.30 crew do 80 minutes
  • 23rd July – 8 am starters 140 minutes, 8.30am crew do 90 minutes
  • 30th July – 8 am starters 150 minutes, 8.30am crew do 100 minutes

The Costa route is flat to allow progression and adding on more distance for training for half marathons etc.  All sessions are non-coached but fab company! [Clive’s words 😉 ]

All abilities welcome, we will look after everyone.

Trail options will be posted once available.

0-5k Graduation June 2017

We had cause for a celebration this week, when our latest group of 0-5k runners completed their 5k run to graduate.  Considering they did it on the hottest June day for 40 years, they did particularly well!

Newent Runners 0-5k Graduation June 2016

Our latest group of graduates

There was a great turnout of club members to run with the group and cheer them on, then we all retreated to the shade of the Sports Bar afterwards for a well deserved cold drink and celebration, plus of course one of Liza’s delicious cakes!

Helen and Kerry

Many thanks to Helen and Kerry, who did a fantastic job of running this course – despite a broken ankle immediately before it started!!  Thanks also go to all the mentors who helped out on sessions and homework runs, and all the club members involved.  Click on the pictures below to see more – I couldn’t get shots of you all receiving your certificates as you’re just too fast already!!

The Big Lunch

Newent Runners at The Big Lunch

Newent had its annual Big Lunch today, with a Hawaiian theme.  There were drinks, ice creams, a raffle, several stalls to browse and lots of music from various groups from the local school.  Newent Runners had a stall, with a competition to win a lovely kite by guessing the number of shoelaces in the jar!! Winner to be contacted shortly…

Sunday Socials

2017 brings you two options for Sunday Socials – Classic or Trail!

Clive is back to lead the Classics!  Meeting every Sunday from 8th January, at 8:30 am at Newent lake for around 70 minutes of gentle jogging in a non coached session, routes often have options to do shorter distances if needed.   Everybody welcome. We will post runs for the first 3 months over the next week, and are planning for one run a month to go “on tour” to different places to keep it fresh – May hill, Robinswood, Cirencester etc. Details will be posted once we have them.

New for this year are Sunday Social Trail Runs, meeting at 8:30 am at Newent Community School.  Led by Chris, these will be social runs so a conversational pace – trail shoes, and drink are essential, there is likely to be mud!  Details of the runs will be posted on the Facebook group – Sunday 15th January will be a May Hill run, 8-9 miles on challenging terrain.

If you have any questions, please get in touch, we’d love to hear from you.  Please note that Wednesday is the only coached session. All other events are informal social runs (often led by a qualified leader, but not always) and, as such, you participate at your own risk.
