Ruth Hayden Cox was Newent Runner’s only entrant in the Fission 20/20 event held at the power station at Berkeley. This event has two races, one of 20kilometres distance, and one of 20 miles. The event was affected, though not spoiled, by heavy overnight rain, which caused a lot of localised flooding. Some entrants had to hitch a ride on a dray lorry to get to the start !
Ruth splashed her way around the 20 mile course in a time of 2 hours 45, very respectable, considering she was five minutes late to the start. Ruth assures me her lateness was due to flooding, not to her renowned wide tolerance band of what constitutes time. Another member, Emily Trenwith was there to give moral support, and to help marshal the race.
Second claim member, Angela Sonn, has been busy in masters indoor track events recently. This weekend saw her achieve a 200 metres PB ,and a second place in the British Championships, at the Lee Valley athletics centre in London. Angela also competes internationally for Great Britain.
Saturday saw the fifth birthday of Newent Parkrun. Newent Runners have close links with this event, both as competitors and as volunteers. Sixty Five runners turned up, many in superhero costumes, and there was plenty of cake to enjoy at the finish. Henry Willis and Andrew Callard claimed third and fourth places respectively.
The Sunday Social run, led by Clive Jones was another Costa special, a variety of distances were completed, the longest being 16 miles. Taking part were; Russ Dyer, John and Yvonne Featherstone, Katie Cook, Emily Trenwith, Carol Loade, Maggie Pettit, Teddy Barnes, Adrian Fishpool, Howard Lowe, Andrew Callard, Helen Knowles, Lynn Latham and Sharon Smith.
