Snow Affected Weekend

The return of the beast from the east put paid to many race plans nationwide this weekend and Newent Runners were no exception. Entries into the Forest of Dean half marathon and the Stafford half, were postponed, disappointing several of Team Tango.

Social runs were also affected. The road run was cancelled and the trail run became a 4.5 mile dog walk. Thanks for coming out, Russ Dyer and Star, Leah Mcateer with Flossy and Yvonne Featherstone with Poppy.

One Newent Runner who was able to compete was Simon Barker. On Wednesday evening he travelled into Wales, to take part in the Blorenge Night Roundabout, a 9.5km fell race near Abergavenny.

Simon lined up alongside only 38 other competitors. He finished in 28th place, with a time of 1:07:48. This was good enough to take first prize in the V60 class, a well earned bottle of beer.

A cold wind howled across the school fields for Saturday’s Newent Parkrun. Little surprise that only 52 runners braved the start. Andrew Callard was the first Newent Runner home, in sixth place, closely followed by Ruth Hayden Cox, in seventh, who was also first female. There were no PB’s recorded, little wonder, given the conditions. Other Newent Runners taking part were, Emily Trenwith, Claire Price, Karen Apted, Helen Knowles, Emma Blewitt, Jo White, Lisa Mansfield, Chris Barber and Duncan Creswell.

Club members also swelled the volunteer ranks. Russ Dyer, Yvonne Featherstone, Katie Cook, Lynn Latham, Maggie Pettit, Sally Taylor and Jo White.

Please remember that there is an EGM, after training this coming Wednesday 21st March, 7.30pm in the Sports Bar.

On Wednesday the 28th, the training night will take place at the Gloucester Athletic Club track, Black Bridge, Tuffley. Please try and attend, we have had nights there in the past and they were enjoyable, but we’ve not been there in a while. It’s an open night, so please, bring a friend along, who you think may be interested.

Sunday Socials

2017 brings you two options for Sunday Socials – Classic or Trail!

Clive is back to lead the Classics!  Meeting every Sunday from 8th January, at 8:30 am at Newent lake for around 70 minutes of gentle jogging in a non coached session, routes often have options to do shorter distances if needed.   Everybody welcome. We will post runs for the first 3 months over the next week, and are planning for one run a month to go “on tour” to different places to keep it fresh – May hill, Robinswood, Cirencester etc. Details will be posted once we have them.

New for this year are Sunday Social Trail Runs, meeting at 8:30 am at Newent Community School.  Led by Chris, these will be social runs so a conversational pace – trail shoes, and drink are essential, there is likely to be mud!  Details of the runs will be posted on the Facebook group – Sunday 15th January will be a May Hill run, 8-9 miles on challenging terrain.

If you have any questions, please get in touch, we’d love to hear from you.  Please note that Wednesday is the only coached session. All other events are informal social runs (often led by a qualified leader, but not always) and, as such, you participate at your own risk.
